Online therapy. How to prepare for a session by video call

An online session lasts as long as one at the practice and follows the same structure. The difference is that you set up the space for it. A few simple things make it easier to focus.
Find a place where nobody can hear you
What matters most is feeling free to speak. A room with the door closed, your car in a car park, or a walk with earphones if home is never quiet.
Headphones and a stable connection
Headphones with a microphone sound better and protect your privacy. Check your connection a few minutes before and charge your phone or laptop.
Give yourself a moment before and after
Many people join straight from a meeting and go back to work the moment the call ends. If you can, keep five minutes for yourself before and after.
If the call drops
It happens. At the first session we agree what we'll do: usually I call again, or I phone you on the number you gave me.
When you travel home
Online sessions make it easy to keep going when you visit family abroad. Just mind the time difference when we plan.
